Sample secret sauce
For 53 years, Kiwanians have filled stomachs with savory salmon in a secret sauce to support Scout and sport programs through the annual Kiwanis Salmon Barbecue.
The club invites all to a day filled with good food and a great view on the beach. While the weather may be uncertain, Scott Traylor, a Kiwanis member, is sure it will be good.
‘It’s only rained twice in the 52 years we’ve had the fundraiser,” he said.
‘Come spend a nice afternoon with fresh barbeque salmon and a secret sauce that no one knows about.”
The group will serve fresh barbecued salmon, baked potatoes, coleslaw, and biscuits. Traylor suggests people arrive early because the club may run out of food.
‘It’s a good buy for $14. You couldn’t buy it at the restaurant for that price.”
The barbecue will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug.1, at Bastendorff Beach County Park. The beach is off Cape Arago Highway and two miles west of Charleston.
Admission costs $14 for adults, $7 for children, at the event or in advance by calling Traylor, (541) 297-3540. Proceeds will benefit local Boy and Girl Scout troops and youth sports programs.
‘This is our biggest fundraiser,” Traylor said.
Every year, the group serves an estimated 1,000 meals. The club hopes to match last year’s $10,000.
